Queer Spaces Linocut by TeeJohnny 6/6
We are so excited to share TeeJohnny's beautiful #linoprint that responds to the prompt, "carving out #multigenerational #queer #spaces."
TeeJohnny shares:
"
When creating the carving I was reflecting on the portraits of queer folx we have up in our hallway at our home. Over the last 15 years, I have had the pleasure and privilege of photographing many queer people in Mi'kmaki and I have been wanting to print and display some of the portraits for a long time. Each portrait (or frame in the carving) reflects a relationship to queerness across identities, values, and experiences. Many people in the portraits face barriers related to queerness, age, disability, race, and more. Carving multi-generational queer spaces requires us to cultivate meaningful relationships in resistance to the world around us as we tend to our collective forest of queer belonging.
I included starlings in the carving as I am continuously inspired by their murmurations and how they create beauty and safety in chaotic and emergent flight patterns. I see carving queer multi-generational spaces as something like starlings in their murmurations while also being like a living breathing tree that has deep roots and a protective canopy for queer folx to rest in. Multi-generational queer spaces are not just physical spaces, they are cultivated through relationships.
For the past few years, I have created hundreds of starling-inspired prints for friends and people in the community who have had a positive impact. This year I will be using the Pride/Swell linocut to send out to people who are making the world a better place. I really enjoyed creating this linocut!"
